When applying for military benefits, records are essential to prove that you are qualified. All discharged personnel records from all five branches of the military are maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Recent service and medical records may not be available online, but are available for free upon request in many cases.
The NARA maintains a website at http://www.archives.gov/veterans where you can access all of the online record archives, as well as find information about obtaining free copies by other means. You can even learn how to replace lost medals and awards. While the records do not contain detailed information about the veteran's participation in military battles and engagements, they do provide information needed for benefit application.
